Mattes custom square saddle pad is a traditional all-purpose design that can be personalised to suit your preferences and your horse. Choose from a range of options including colour, quilted fabric, velvet quilting and sheepskin, with further choices for the sheepskin layout and underside. Made in Europe from premium quality materials, this Mattes saddle pad is designed for general-purpose riding and everyday equestrian use.

Mattes custom square saddle pad options

The square shape provides a familiar, versatile profile for an all-purpose saddle pad. Mattes offers several ways to configure the pad, including normal quilt fabric, quilt sheen or velvet quilting fabric. Sheepskin options include front only, front and back, rear only on the topside, or no sheepskin. For the underside, you can choose semi-lined or sickle-shaped sheepskin, depending on the specification selected.

The quilted construction uses two layers: POLYFLEX®, a deep-needled needle felt intended for shape retention and pressure equalisation, together with polyester wadding for padding. Mattes states that foam, neoprene and gel are not used in this construction, allowing the quilted design to remain fully air-permeable.

Depending on the configuration chosen, the pad can include Mattes’ Saddle-Fix®, Correction System® and SPINEFREE® options. Saddle-Fix® allows the centre strip of the saddle panels to be fixed in the saddle chamber, helping the saddle cloth remain enclosed and centred beneath the saddle. This can be particularly useful when specified alongside the Correction System®.

The Correction System® uses a single or double pocket that can hold up to three POLY-FLEX® inserts. Mattes describes this system as allowing saddle-position corrections of up to 30mm. The insert pockets may be worth considering where adjustability is important, such as during a young horse’s physical development or following a period when a horse has been out of work. Any change to the pad or insert arrangement should be considered alongside the saddle’s fit.
